My research examines the development of reading and writing skills. To this end, I conduct cross-sectional and longitudinal studies with monolingual and bilingual children, and adults. I came to this area of research following on my initiation into research in bilingualism as an undergraduate at the University of Prince Edward Island. I have a particular interest in how children build up an understanding of the way that words are made up of roots and affixes and how they use this in their reading and writing, which I developed during my doctoral studies. I am fortunate to be able to conduct my research in collaboration with many wonderful students and colleagues, teachers and children from universities and schools across Canada and around the world. Outside of the academic sphere, I love to spend time in the outdoors, hiking, cycling or running in the many beautiful places in the Maritimes. I am also trying to raise a bilingual cat, who seems more intent on unloading my sock drawer than on learning French. As you can see, it can be difficult to separate work and home life!
